Synopsis -

Homicide Detective Sami Rizzo is at it again! She never dreamed “America’s Finest City,” would be tormented by yet another serial killer, but for the third time in the last five years a depraved maniac is stalking the streets of San Diego. Based on her qualifications and prior successes dealing with multiple murders, who else would Captain Davison assign to head the investigation?

Different from Sami’s past experiences, this fanatic is like no other. His methods of killing defy everything profilers think they know about serial killers. As an intense investigation begins and bits and pieces of evidence emerge, no one can understand his motivation. He’s merciful, yet brutal. And just to make things even more confusing, all of his victims are blood-related. Is he settling a vendetta? Did he randomly pick a name out of the phone book and begin a rampage? Or is there a deeper story?

Based on very little evidence and a lot of gut instincts, Detective Rizzo pieces together a complex puzzle and narrows the field of possible suspects. She learns that the killings may connect in some way to powerful people within the judicial system and doesn’t know who to trust. Ultimately, she comes face to face with the killer for a battle of brain and brawn. Can she outwit the shrewd killer, or will she be his next victim?

Review -

A Piece of You is the third of three books I am reviewing by this author featuring San Diego homicide detective Sami Rizzo. Annechino writes psychological thrillers that are just over the line - enough to get your heart pounding but still let you fall asleep at night. Gory details are for the most part left to the imagination.

Sami is again on the trail of a new serial killer, one who cuts off part of one leg post mortem. Why? It's a mystery that doesn't become clear until about 3/4 of the way through the book. Then a new dimension is added when we find out all those killed are related. The story line shifts in narrative from Sami's story to the killer's story. This lets the reader follow the logic of the detective's thinking as well as explore, and in this case sympathize, with the serial killer.

Of the three books in this series, this one has less of the truly creepy aspect found in They Never Die Quietly and Resuscitation which is fine by me. I enjoyed letting warped evil step aside for a character whose motivation I could wrap my mind around. While the killer does admit to killing people who do not deserve it and what he does post mortem is very disturbing, the reason behind his shedding blood and dismembering the corpse is heartbreaking. The reader can understand and relate all too well with the emotions driving him. As such, I think I of the three in this series, I enjoyed this one the most.
