Vancouver Fashion Week SS22 - Interview With Designer Psy Lau (Hong Kong)

Please share a bit about your journey to choose a career in fashion? Where did you choose to study or, if self taught, how did you gain your skills?

My journey started in high school when I watched fashion show organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. After graduating in 2018, I studied menswear design at the Hong Kong Design Institute. It was my studies here that inspired me to become a menswear designer. Through studying menswear design, I gained the knowledge of how to tailor a suit - the construction, the cutting and the details. After graduating from the Hong Kong Design Institute, I chose to acquire more knowledge on both menswear and womenswear by pursuing a fashion design degree at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In the future, I hope to continue my studies by pursuing a Master's Degree in menswear at Central Saint Martin.

What inspired you to launch your own label? What has been your highest moment since launching your line?

Two things inspired me to launch my own label - people loving the designs I created while studying at the Hong Kong Design Institute; and winning the Hong Kong Best in Redress Design Award in 2021. I hope through my designs to help people, gain their confidence, find their beauty and love each other. The highest moment since launching my line was participating the Opening of the Milan Fashion Week on 20th September 2021. This was my first time to ever participate in the fashion week.

How would you describe your brand? What is the aesthetic? Who is the customer you design for?

I would describe my brand as a kind of educator, teaching people to learn how to love themselves and each other. Everyone is imperfect, but we live in beautiful and amazing ways. We find beauty in things that are weird and imperfect - sometimes they are actually much more interesting. My designs are created for people who love fashion, street style and aged around 20 – 35. They are also suitable for business man to work or go party in.

Can you share something about the Collection you'll be showing casing at Vancouver Fashion Week SS 2? What was the inspiration? What fabrics and palette did you use?

The collection I will be showing at Vancouver Fashion Week is named as A.D.H.D. The inspiration came from my mental health as reference. I am a person who suffered from A.D.H.D (Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder) and I hope people learn to love each other even when some of us are different. The fabrics are sportswear fabrics -  mainly nylon, polyester and reflective materials - to create sportwear in street style. The colors are mainly yellow, black and purple. Yellow represents the hyperactivity of ADHD people, whereas the black and purple represent the negative emotions of the ADHD people.

Do you have a favourite look in this collection? Is there one piece that is a must have piece?

Yes. My favorite look is the half suit set in street style. It is a must have piece.

Where can readers find your garments? How can they purchase them?

Readers can find and purchase my garments through Instagram @psy.lau.official and the new website for shopping which will be announced through Instagram. Orders can also be customized.

“Through my designs I like exploring new solutions for fashion that have the potential to change consumption behaviors, limit the negative environmental impacts of the fashion industry. I enjoy finding beauty in things that are odd and imperfect.” - Psy Lau
