Vancouver Fashion Week SS22 - Interview With Designer Gwen Hine (U.S.)

Please share a bit about your journey to choose a career in fashion? Where did you choose to study or, if self taught, how did you gain your skills?

At a young age I started sewing, designing, and illustrating, always with the dream to have a career in fashion. These early experiences led me to pursue a BA in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. I was trained here for four years with a specialization in evening wear design. Since graduation, I have been both working in the industry as a designer and pursuing my own personal collection alongside custom design projects.

What inspired you to launch your own label? What has been your highest moment since launching your line?

After graduating college, I was inspired to launch my own collection because I finally had the freedom and skillset to design whatever I wanted. When facing the task of what to design, I noticed athleisure becoming more and more popular but I wanted to offer a fresh take on it. I wanted to create designs with a sporty feel but that could be both dressed up or down and worn in a variety of ways. My highest moment since launching this collection has been being invited to showcase at Vancouver Fashion Week.

How would you describe your brand? What is the aesthetic? Who is the customer you design for?

I would describe my designs as modern, youthful and energetic. My aesthetic offers a fresh take on luxury in the modern world. I design for a confident and dynamic customer.

Can you share something about the Collection you'll be showing casing at Vancouver Fashion Week SS 2? What was the inspiration? What fabrics and palette did you use?

The collection I will be showing at Vancouver Fashion week was created by integrating athleisure and evening wear as one. I was inspired by a wide array of athletics such as tennis, gymnastics, scuba diving, and boxing. The purpose behind this collection was to develop garments for the modern woman, pieces that are versatile and can be worn day into night in many different variations. This collection truly is the crossroads for athleisure and evening wear, offering an array of bold colors, dramatic contour lines, luxurious fabrics, drawstring parachute skirts, hooded bustiers, and unique necklines.

Do you have a favourite look in this collection? Is there one piece that is a must have piece?

My favorite look is actually the first that I designed for this collection. This look features a drawstring parachute skirt with a front zipped hooded bodice. The dramatic contour lines and hints of orange really pop against the white base fabric. I love seeing someone walking in this piece because the movement of the skirt ruffles with the drawstrings is very energetic and interesting.

Where can readers find your garments? How can they purchase them?

Readers can visit my website, www.gwenhinedesign.com and contact me to place a custom order or to purchase a piece from my latest collection.
