Vancouver Fashion Week SS22 - Interview With Designer Berenice Jiménez (Mexico)

Please share a bit about your journey to choose a career in fashion? Where did you choose to study or, if self taught, how did you gain your skills?

I am a native of Aguascalientes, Mexico. I began to explore my creativity through art as a young child. This led to a passion for fashion design. I chose to study degree at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes where I graduated with a degree in fashion Design in Clothing and Textiles. Using the sensory method, I began creating avant-garde designs that gradually took on a contemporary nuance, and eventually gave rise to the Berenice Jiménez brand in 2017.

What inspired you to launch your own label? What has been your highest moment since launching your line?

Everything started as a college project of brand development. In the process, I fused concepts that interested me such as handmade women's garments. Versatile and cultural fashion also interested me, so much so that I decided to continue elaborating on the concept after I finishing college.

The most satisfactory moment for me so far in my career was presenting my brand for the first time on the runway in a public show.

How would you describe your brand? What is the aesthetic? Who is the customer you design for?

Berenice Jiménez is a hidrocálida brand that preserves and uses artisan techniques made by artisans from the region, and fuses them with actual trends so that women’s elegance and subtlety can be seen in every moment, while always respecting their personality. These qualities are why our customers are drawn to us, and why they choose our gala and bridal dresses  for their important ceremonies and events.

Can you share something about the Collection you'll be showing casing at Vancouver Fashion Week SS 2? What was the inspiration? What fabrics and palette did you use?

The collection I will be showing at Vancouver Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2022 is called, "Inefablean." My inspiration was based on a cyclic love like water which begins with splendid crush like the seas and gentle as the clouds. This is represented by vaporous, delicate silhouettes and exquisite embroidery in warm tones and pastel colours. The disappointment of water - gray skies and rains -is the next phase. You'll see silhouettes featuring transparencies and linear structures in tones that turn dark. This leads to a stronger love that ends the dark and starts a new cycle featuring delicate silhouettes and gold tones.

Do you have a favourite look in this collection? Is there one piece that is a must have piece?

No I don't. I believe every single outfit has it's own unique characteristics, so every one is special.
