Synopsis -

He came back determined to keep his promise.

Daniel and his younger brother grew up in an abusive home. Daniel escaped. Now an established stunt rider, he intends to go back to rescue his brother. But then one jump goes horribly wrong . . .

He recovers to find himself in Iowa, unscathed, yet his life has drastically changed. His best friend won’t answer his calls. Even his girlfriend is hiding something. Increasingly terrified, he clings to the one thing he knows: He must pick up his brother in San Francisco. In five days.

From the isolating fields of Iowa to the crowded streets of San Francisco, Daniel must fight his way through a fog of disjointed memories and supernatural encounters to face the truth and pay a debt he didn’t know he owed.

Review -

Having read four previous books by this author, I was intrigued. She has released three titles in non-fiction since her last fiction offering. It was worth the wait.

The Beached Ones offers a dark, deeply emotional look into the minds of those who are considering suicide as an answer to their difficult lives. The supernatural is embraced throughout as are life questions.  Why are we here? What is our purpose? How did our story unfold?  All is uncovered as we follow the lives of Daniel, his brother, a woman he loves and the man who she is travelling with.

The author takes us step by step through their stories, revealing a bit here and  a bit there - like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle.  The story is not an easy read. Difficult lives and difficult moments are shared. So I want to mention for anyone in a dark place, this could be triggering. But for those on the outside looking in, there is a window into the minds of those who are struggling to put one foot in front of the other while mired in the abyss of depression.

This is a powerful story, but very heavy emotionally.  So it's important to know that in the final chapter, a ray of light is turned on. Hope is offered. No matter what your struggles, there is always a future that offers hope.
