Interview -

Please share a bit about your journey to embrace fashion design as a career.

As cliché as it may seem, I have always felt like fashion design was a calling for me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a deep admiration for footwear, even though I mostly designed clothing as a young girl. However, in 2016 I enrolled in a 2-week shoe-making intensive in Toronto, Canada, that gave me the tools I needed to develop my knowledge of footwear design as I embarked on a journey to secure a job with established brands. It wasn’t until I faced numerous rejections from companies that I had looked up to that I decided to build a noteworthy portfolio and ended up creating a brand to house and protect my designs.

How did you learn your skills?

The 2-week shoe-making intensive taught me the basics I needed. From there I went on to develop my knowledge of footwear design through deconstruction of old footwear, access to online materials such as video tutorials, as well as trial and error with the bespoke shoemaking process.

Who are you as a designer? Aesthetic? Customer? Brand?

I am a free-spirited individual who is not constrained by the norms of society, a mirror of my brand, MOLLY- refined femininity and all things fiery. MOLLY is bold & fearless, edgy & sophisticated, yet authentic & playful. It rejects predefined norms and delivers design solutions to the dominant & all-powerful woman

What comes easiest for you as a designer? What is hardest?

The easiest part of what I do as a designer is my ability to create concepts from any idea, no matter how miniscule it may seem. My mind will always find a way to incorporate concepts into designs.

On the contrary, the most difficult part for me is working alone to build a brand. It really takes a lot of sacrifice, time, patience, and endurance to drive a vision and establish MOLLY as a luxury brand

Where do you find inspiration for new collections? How important is colour to your design process?

Colour plays a key role in adding character and unifying designs in my collection. When I create, I try to draw inspiration from my experiences and challenges, which is what you’ll see reflected in my footwear collection - The Gemini Rebirth. The Gemini Rebirth is my rendition of the “ever-changing” twin sign that answers to the restrictions of completed design silhouettes.

Readers would love to know more about the current collection you showed at Vancouver Fashion Week.

MOLLY’s current collection shown at Vancouver Fashion Week consisted of both classic interchangeable footwear like The 3-in-1 GR1 as well as new designs like The GR2 & GR3. The showcase marked a shift in MOLLY’s product line as I ventured into the amazing world of clothing. Over 16 hand-tailored pieces were designed to complement the edge and sophistication of the footwear line while bringing an added ‘made in Africa’ heritage to the brand.

Do you have a favorite look in this collection?

I honestly cannot decide which look is my favourite. I love and admire everything I’ve created.

Where can readers purchase your designs?

All fashion lovers & style enthusiasts can purchase current and unreleased designs directly from my site at www.brandedbymolly.com

What's next for you as a designer and your brand?

I think my focus moving forward would be developing my brand awareness as I expand into broader terrains. I’ve managed to navigate my way through the footwear industry to the best of my knowledge, so it would be necessary to apply the same efforts as I expand the scope of my brand.
