Meet The SHINE2018 Team - Kerry Gibson

Please share a little bit about who you are and what you do.

I am the President of EcoCentury Technologies, which is a socially directed developer and distributor of clean Technologies such as LED lighting and Hydrogen powered amphibious vehicles. I also serve on the Board of Directors of many Foundations and Organizations, along with building a scholarship fund for Women in Trades, creating accessibility through both policy and infrastructure, directs large scale economic development for social protection, fundraising/PR for various causes, building legislation, and mentoring youth around the world.

Currently I am focused on several collaborations that will address the SDGs both locally and globally using innovative solutions applying a business lens to philanthropy. I speak on global platforms including the UN addressing economic development, the promotion of equality for all, and has represented the private sector's role in civil society. I have also been named UN Women Planet 5050 Champion, the Canadian Ambassador for the United Nations Women's Entrepreneurship Day Campaign, a Canadian Global Goodwill Ambassador, and has recently received a Times of Canada award for Excellence in Innovation, a Shakti Award, and the 2018 Honour Award by the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organization.

How did you meet Dean Thullner?

I had the pleasure of meeting Dean when I was searching for a supporter for Elevate and Celebrate, a campaign and event series that funded accessibility to a Heritage building. Of course he and his amazing team said yes, they always rally for a good cause!

You are part of the SHINE2018 team. What is your position on the SHINE team and what does your work entail?

I am the director of public relations for the SHINE2018 team. I will be ensuring that SHINE is highlighted to the community as it should be! In saying that, we very much appreciate the support of individuals like yourself who are ready to write and speak about this brilliant cause, and whomever would like to introduce SHINE to Vancouver through media let's have coffee and talk about how perfect this night will be!

SHINE2018 has the hashstag #nostigma, and the funds raised are earmarked for programs servicing those struggling with mental illness and addiction. Was this a part of your reason for volunteering? If so, please share a little bit about your passion for this cause.

SDG 3, good health and well being is the role of the entire community to achieve. From kindness to your neighbour to curing cancer, we all play a role. This year, supporting the Hope center at Lions Gate Hospital resonates with us all as we find ourselves being swallowed up by the opioid epidemic and youth after youth loses their hope, their future, their lives to the consequences. We all want to ensure this program is as firmly supported as possible. Dean and his team have dedicated their lives to mental health and addictions related causes, and I support those who are committed as he is. Completely, totally, fully.

What are you most looking forward to at SHINE2018 in terms of the amazing show being created?

It is always a joy to witness the collective love within such a diverse space. From surgeons to drag queens, we all are there to ensure the success of SHINE. We dig deep and throw the most exhilarating event, the most spectacularly fantastical showcase, that raises impactful contributions year after year.

Any last thing you'd like to share - a quote, a thought, an encouragement for people to attend and/or donate.

We watch them fall and feel helpless... then one by one we connect, interlace our wills and our work and collectively uplift all who struggle, then none will struggle, none will fall.
