Notes To My Son by Eric Lynn

"The greatest gift for dads of all ages and in all stages."

“Your path is your own.”

“No one can tell you how to walk it.”
 “Responsibility lies with you.”

Synopsis -

These are just some of the important conversations we are gently reminded to embrace within Notes to My Son. With parenting, there are so many things we need to do and take care of, but what conversations are we having to be sure we truly impart the wisdom of our lives into our loved ones? Are we having difficult conversations, asking hard questions, and talking about things without regret?

Don’t let another day pass by without this book.

In Notes to My Son, you’ll discover twenty-five topics to inspire deeper, more meaningful conversations throughout your child’s life, even if your child is now an adult on their own.

Review -

Notes To My Son is a short book filled with focused, to the point themed chapters. In each, the author shares a single nugget of wisdom that can be applied in both your personal and professional life.

I am a fan of this format for this genre of book.  Having each chapter offer just one thought allows you to pick the book up, read about a single idea, and then put it down. You have all the time you need to think about what you've read as it's not packaged with a lot of other information.  Does it apply to your life? How can you make this work for you?  You can also pick the book up and put it down over a long period of time as each chapter stands on its own - great if you have limited free time.

What did surprise me was the complexity of the language at times. As Notes to My Son was inspired by the upcoming birth of his first child, I expected the book to be written in a simpler language - more like how a father would talk to a younger son.  Instead, Wynn has chosen to write it in a very adult business language - "Metrics are objectives or goals," "accelerating your completion percentage," "conversion quantifiable," "connotation of belief."

As this book is meant to be a sharing of knowledge with both his son and a wider adult readership, I think it would have benefitted by simplifying some of the language. I found it distracting when I had to occasionally pause to consider what a phrase here and there meant.

A quick, enjoyable read with lots of life nuggets to inspire you, but you'll have to wrap your mind around some complicated business language here and there.

  2. A very insightful book from a loving father. Since I'm of an older generation, it makes me think of some of the subjects that maybe I didn't talk enough about to my own children. Sweet and honest tribute to his son. I think anyone would love it.
