Synopsis -

Does your future as a writer feel uncertain? You write day after day. You dream of bestseller’s lists and royalty checks, but despite your best marketing efforts, those dreams remain out of reach.

You wonder if you’re wasting your time. Does your writing even matter?

Author Colleen M. Story, a long-time professional writer and writing coach, helps you decide whether you truly have a writer’s DNA. She examines why you feel pressured to make money with your work, why the search for a readership is both motivating and discouraging, and why it’s so common to doubt yourself along the way.

Step by step, you’ll gain a clear-eyed view at the challenges a writer faces in the outside world, while taking your own journey inward to discover what writing really means to you.

Should you continue on this path, or adjust your course now before it’s too late? Don’t waste your precious time in indecision. Let Your Writing Matters guide you to your truth and you’ll never look back again.

Review -

This is my 4th book review for this author and the 3rd book she has written in support of those of us who are struggling to put "pen to paper."  In the two previous books she focused on a wide range of topics from procrastination to marketing and offered exercises to get your moving.  Your Writing Matters, her latest, is the most personal and soul baring. It goes deep.

Writing of any kind is for the most part a very solitary endeavor.  You work alone and only you can keep yourself focused and moving forward.  While some forms of writing involve outside deadlines, such as for magazines or businesses, a lot of our time is in our hands. We set the schedule. We have to let go of the outside world and ignore distractions. We have to face our demons alone. And our families and friends don't always view what we do as a career, especially if we aren't making serious money.

Colleen's June '21 interview with Author Nation founder Melody Owen

In this book Story helps authors really open the door on our insecurities and shine a light on what is causing them. She offers a chance here to look clearly at our demons: not feeling we are good enough, struggling to respect ourselves and our work, defining our success only in terms of money and fame, not knowing our purpose and more.  She keeps the dialogue simple and walks us step by step through each area offering questions at the end for us to consider to help us find the answers hidden deep inside.  And that is the key here - you have to let go of what others say and instead find your own truth.  Only you have the answers for you.

For some, the questions asked at the end of the each chapter will be the pause you need as you go along to really dig deep and then incorporate the answers you find.  For others, like myself, you'll want to read the book from end to end to set the stage, and then return and go through each chapter slowly and dive deep into the exercises one at a time. This is the way I've approached all of Story's books in support of writers.

Whether a published writer struggling as to get new work finished, or a budding one just starting out, Your Writing Matters offers new ways of looking the hurdles you are facing and guidance on how to discover your own truths.

    1. The author has 3 books written to support writers/authors and each is a great read - just covering different aspects of it. Again. I read them, then go back through and do the exercises at the end.

    1. I found this book really helpful myself as I struggle with procrastination because of self-doubt. I have read her other 2 books on writing as well. Each is different, but this one addresses our personal struggles the best.
