Review -

Discovery of the Five Senses is the debut book by author K.N. Smith.  It lands solidly in the Young Adult Fantasy genre and I suspect will find it's biggest appeal with teenage boys as almost all the main characters are high school age and male.

The story opens with a flashback, then heads to the current time where five friends are unexpectedly given special powers. Each has one heightened sense - taste, smell, sight, hearing or touch. As well they suddenly have the ability to fight like ninjas - skills they did not possess before. Their mission, to save the world from the evil Druth.

The book has all the elements teen readers (especially male) will enjoy - an evil supernatural being, special powers bestowed, instant ninja fighting skills, trying to hide from parents and friends their special night time forays, school academic demands, worry about their future and teen angst.

The one part I think might not appeal to this age group is the first few chapters where the author goes a little too flowery in her descriptions. My opinion. Once past that it settles into a story line appropriate for this genre and reader.
