A Story From My Closet #12 - Giovanna Ricci, My Purple Coat

Guest Article by Giovanna Ricci

A beautiful purple coat is
one of my most cherished garments, as well as the oldest piece in my closet. Each time I wear it, I am transported back to the mid-80's when I was living in Milan, Italy. Everything about this coat screams "Made in Italy," from the design right down to the production.

Let's start with the actual design on the coat. It was designed by "moi," but my inspiration came from Gianni Versace's looks at the time. In those days, this designer was truly my fashion idol. I had the good fortune to meet and chat with him once when I lived there. I found him  to be humble, kind, and encouraging to this young Vancouver girl who knocked on his door - her portfolio in hand.

The fabric was also made in Italy - a wool/cashmere blend gifted to me by a supplier working with the company I was designing for. Because I didn't have my own sewing machine while I was lived there, I had a tailor friend of mine produce it for me from a detailed working sketch I made.

This coat kept me warm during the cold Italian winters and, of course, I brought it home with me when I returned back to Vancouver. However, it stayed packed away for awhile. Then one day a few years later I pulled it out again. I am still enjoying wearing my purple coat to this day, and the memories of my time in Milan wearing it brings.

My one regret? Years ago I decided to alter it and ended up shortening it by several inches. I wish to this day I had kept it long.
