Born and raised in Guadalajara Jalisco MX, Maricarmen was taught the love for sewing and fashion by her grandma at a young age. Inspired by her long heritage of seamstresses, she pursued a career in fashion design in Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.
During that time, she stood out among her peers by experimenting with different kinds of materials. After graduating from college, she returned to Guadalajara. Facing Covid-19 lockdown led her to create by The Regretter, with the intention to encourage people to get out of their comfort zone and to promote a more conscious way of fashion.
Interview -
Please share a bit about your journey to embrace fashion design as a career.
Since I was a little girl I have been passionate about fashion, the way you can express yourself and feel good just by wearing something you like. Over time I realized the silent yet so obvious impact that fashion has on society.
My grandmother and her sisters had a sewing workshop and I was struck by the creative freedom and the world of possibilities that you had in your hands having a cloth, a needle and scissors.
Honestly, I always knew this was what I wanted to do in life.
How did you learn your skills?
I learned to sew as a child in my grandmother´s house. It always caught my attention how she made clothes out of plain fabric.
Later on, at school, I learned new techniques and immersed myself into the complex world of fashion design.
Who are you as a designer? Aesthetic? Customer? Brand?
I think there's a duality in my personality that is reflected in my designs, a reserved, yet fun persona.
As a brand, The Regretter can be described as a classic yet drastic kind of style, always trying to promote a more conscious way of fashion by encouraging people to appreciate long lasting pieces instead of fast fashion.

What comes easiest for you as a designer? What is hardest?
What comes easiest for me is landing the inspiration into a project, and the part I enjoy the most is prototyping. Once I have the inspiration down I love to play with it and turn it into something to wear, I also love the process of making the prototypes of the designs and changing and refining details.
For me the hardest part is planning. At the end of the day not everything is fun and games, you have to be very organized to keep up in this industry and actually make a living out if it.

Where do you find inspiration for new collections? How important is colour to your design process?
I often find inspiration in nature and architecture, its silhouettes, textures and what it makes you feel.
I´m not a very colorful person, and as a brand, The Regretter is more of a sober colors kind of brand. I kind of get obsessed with one ore two and go crazy with what they represent or make you feel instead of using them literally.

The Nayarit collection is inspired by the fishing activity and the beaches of the Pacific coast of Mexico and the species that inhabit it. Fishing is a symbol of social cohesion and cultural identity, which gives meaning to life in the coastal communities that depend on this activity.

The collection, made up of a mixture of neutral and bright colors, refers to the large number of species that inhabit the Riviera. Linen, like fishing, dates back thousands of years, it refers to the humble but important profession of the fishermen of the Mexican coast.
The silhouettes and cuts are inspired by the sea and the beautiful beaches of Nayarit.
Do you have a favorite look in this collection?
I like everything together.
