Day 3 asks me to write 2 future poems of friendships. One is future of a friendship or new ones, where things are going great. The other is one where friendships haven't gone well.  Firing up the imagination again. I added to the challenge by rhyming one of the two.

Lost Connections

Our souls seemed to link
From the time we could crawl
Before we could chatter
And to stand was to fall.

We walked the same day
Sat together in school.
Sang silly songs at full volume
Splashed as one in the pool.

In our teens we diverged
Different interested emerged.
We spent little time together
But our hearts were still merged.

Landed on opposite coasts,
Jobs with nothing in common.
One married with young ones,
The other alone slurping ramen.

The drift grew ever wider,
Our connection grew thin.
Yet still warm, fond memories
Would infrequently drift in.

Then I read in the paper
One dark rainy day.
Of you passing quite quickly
In some terrible way.

Huge tears flowed out freely.
Regret filling my heart.
If I had only reached out sooner.
Kept in touch, done my part.

Old Friends

Old friends...
According to the song
We sat on a park bench
Like bookends.
Really?
My friends and I are
Young at heart,
Full of curiosity and desires.
We read, we explore,
We experience, we thrive.
Each year we get older
Aging exacts its due toll.
An ache here, a illness there.
Memory not always working.
But...
We live with the inevitable,
While ignoring what we can.
Instead of moping and groaning,
We are laughing and reaching
For all the world offers.
Tomorrow...
Maybe the seniors' home calls,
But you can be sure
My friends and I will be
Lined up in the hallway,
All in our wheelchairs,
Awaiting the signal.
Bang - off we go pell-mell at
Whatever speed we can manage.
Racing and laughing until
The aides insist that we halt.
We chose to barrel through what comes,
Crashing, leaping and diving,
Towards our inevitable end.
There we will hold hands
And pass, smile on our faces.
Our spirits still together
Floating in the ether
Where we will continue
Our rabble rousing mayhem.
Old Friends....Bookends...
BAH HUMBUG!
