A smart and enchanting postwar mystery that will appeal to fans of the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear.

Synopsis -

It is 1946, and war-weary young ex-intelligence officer Lane Winslow leaves London to look for a fresh start. When she finds herself happily settled into a sleepy hamlet in the interior of British Columbia surrounded by a suitably eclectic cast of small-town characters she feels like she may finally be able to put her past to rest.

But then a body is discovered, the victim of murder, and although she works alongside the town’s inspectors Darling and Ames to discover who might have possibly have motivation to kill, she unknowingly casts doubt on herself. As the investigation reveals facts that she has desperately tried to keep a secret, it threatens to pull her into a vortex of even greater losses than the ones she has already endured.

Review -

I was looking for a new murder mystery series and this one came highly recommended by the bookstore owner I was talking with. A Killer in King's Cove is the first Lane Winslow title in what is currently a ten book series. That means I have nine more books to look forward to.

The main character is a strong woman, which I always appreciate, who has moved from London where she worked undercover in the war effort, to British Columbia, Canada. She hopes moving there will help her start over, to leave behind her memories from the war as well as heal from the death of her love.

I worried that the length of this book, a little longer than most of the mysteries I read, would cause me to lose interest, but that was not the case.  The story was neither slow or rushed. It moved along at just the right pace to move the story forward as well as allow me to fully embrace the characters and setting. I loved that as the murder mystery plot was unfolding, the author tucked in flashbacks that offered the background needed to better understand the characters actions.

A modern novel that gives a nod to the traditional murder mystery. I will be checking out the rest of this series in the future.

Iona Whishaw was born in 1948 to English parents in British Columbia and brought up in Mexico and the US. She worked as a youth worker, taught high school and served for 16 years as a high school administrator in Vancouver, Canada. She earned a Masters of Arts degree in creative writing from UBC and was the recipient of the YWCA Women of Distinction in Education award and a Canada's Top Principals award.

Her first work was a children's book, Henry and the Cow Problem, and because she has loved mysteries since her early love affair with Nancy Drew, she has recently embarked on a well-reviewed period mystery series beginning with A Killer In King's Cove and Death In The Darkening Mist. The books are set in 1946 in a charming backwater community in BC that the author lived in as a child. It is a community that cannot, alas, escape the press of the wider darker forces of the world and the effects of the war they have just come through. Her main character is based to no small extent on her own mother who engaged in espionage during WW2, and provided a life of travel and high adventure for her daughter
