Please share a bit about your journey to embrace fashion design as a career.
I have always been drawn to art, even though I grew up in a business-oriented family. While contributing to the family business, I dedicated my free time to exploring my creative side. I have a natural inclination to seek change and discomfort, as I firmly believe that growth stems from these experiences. This trait, though viewed as a challenge by some, has proven to be a blessing, allowing me to explore various fields and places. This led me to make a significant change by moving to Canada, providing the perfect opportunity for a fresh start and the pursuit of something new. Fashion had always intrigued me, and in 2019, I decided to take the leap and enrolled in Fashion Design School. I found what I was always craving, the perfect blend between art, business and creativity. From there everything has been a blur for me but I just know I want more of it.
How did you learn your skills?
In fashion school, I prioritized mastering the basics and cultivating a passion for perfection. Always the first in and last out, I eagerly read books and experimented with different fabrics. Recognizing the significance of mentorship, I continue to value guidance. Today, I persistently invest in self-study through books, courses, and webinars — it's the key to reaching the top.
Who are you as a designer? Aesthetic? Customer? Brand?
I narrate personal stories through my garments, treating fashion as an art form expressing my journey. My collections aim to evoke emotions and challenge mindsets, characterized by an elegant yet unconventional aesthetic with tailored pieces featuring a mix of movement, softness, and strength. The ideal customer reflects confidence, power, and empathy, mirroring the balance present in my designs.
What comes easiest for you as a designer? What is hardest?
I have a constant flow of ideas, making it easy for me to generate concepts and collections. However, this abundance of ideas often leads me to jump from one concept to another. One of my challenges is the difficulty in reaching a definitive 'finish' for a garment; I tend to continuously add elements and contemplate potential improvements. I am quite critical of my work, and managing this self-critique can be challenging.
Where do you find inspiration for new collections? How important is color to your design process?
My collections are deeply personal, I draw inspiration from my personal journey and experiences. The cycles of change and the concept of mortality motivate me, particularly the idea of Death, which serves as a constant reminder to pursue meaningful endeavors and follow what truly resonates with us. In terms of my color scheme, I strive for elegance and sophistication, often incorporating a darker palette with intriguing undertones.
Do you have a favorite look in this collection?
I don't have a favorite look as each design holds its own unique beauty. I believe that every piece contributes to the overall narrative and aesthetic, showcasing the diverse elements and creativity embedded in the collection. Each look has been crafted with equal attention to detail, and I find beauty in the individuality and cohesion of the entire ensemble.
Where can readers purchase your designs?
Readers can purchase my runway designs directly from my website, acquiring pieces that have graced the stages of the world's biggest fashion capitals, including Paris, London, Milan, and New York Fashion Week. Additionally, those interested in a more personalized experience can inquire about the made-to-measure process. Given the intricate nature of these garments, ensuring a perfect fit is paramount. I am committed to delivering unique and meticulously crafted designs that not only captivate on the runway but also seamlessly tailor to the individual preferences and measurements of my clients.
In closing is there anything else you'd like to share with readers?
In closing, I want to encourage each of you to pursue what truly resonates with your essence. Remember, it's never too late to embark on the journey that aligns with your passions. Let the awareness of our mortality serve as a powerful motivator to live life to the fullest, love more profoundly, and find a sense of purpose. Readers would love to hear about the collection you will be showing on the runway at New York Fashion Week FW24 in February? Inspiration, fabrics, palette, etc.?
"Ephemera" draws inspiration from my childhood and the profound cycles of life. The orchid, a flower reminiscent of my mother, embodies the captivating concept of blooming after a dormant period. Similar to life's phases, it highlights the beauty in transitions, emphasizing the ephemeral nature of everything. Exploring new techniques with fabrics like lace, beading, and appliqués, I've maintained a synchronized palette to present a cohesive narrative. It reflects my personal journey and underscores the beauty found in every phase of the process
