Please share a bit about your journey to embrace fashion design as a career.

Ever since my childhood days, at the age of six, drawing and designing little clothes for my dolls was my favorite pastime. Whenever someone asked what I aspired to be in the future, I would promptly reply, 'An art teacher.' However, my dad had different plans for me and wasn't supportive of a career in art.

During the five-year course in pharmacy and gaining some hands-on experience, I realized that my heart still lay in fashion design. This led me to a significant decision - I left my job to pursue a master's degree in art, with a focus on fashion design.

Achieving two master's degrees in art further strengthened my belief in the healing abilities of art. It's why I've chosen to concentrate on themes related to mental illness and disability in my works. These are topics I find not only important but also deeply resonate with.

How did you learn your skills?

I was studying at a medical university when I decided to transfer to the fashion field. So I got books on the history of Chinese and international clothing, seeking out online tutorials on fashion illustration and pattern making, and used my spare time to read and draw sketches. I created a new drawing almost every day at that time, and before graduating from the medical university, I also compiled an extensive and diverse portfolio of fashion design.

My journey in sketching began without any formal training in painting, resulting in early sketches that were quite elementary, akin to children's drawings. However, persistent practice and critical self-reflection gradually honed my skills. I learned that in the world of fashion design, while drawing is an essential skill, the real essence lies in the practical application of ideas and a deep understanding of masterworks, fabrics, and market trends. Recognizing the demands of the modern, fast-paced work environment, I turned to Computer-Aided Design (CAD), realizing its efficiency over traditional hand drawing. I invested in a series of industry-recommended software learning books and taught myself the crucial software tools for design.

The saying 'Interest is the best teacher' truly resonated with me, but it was during my pursuit of two master's degrees in fashion design that I gained a more profound understanding. These studies not only deepened my knowledge in various cultural ideologies and expanded my artistic horizons but also significantly contributed to my development as a fashion designer.

Who are you as a designer? Aesthetic? Customer? Brand?

I view each of my creations as a unique entity, ripe with the potential for endless exploration. I'm committed to nurturing every spark of inspiration that flickers into my mind, reluctant to let go of any idea too quickly. In my work, I employ a diverse array of methods, elements, and materials. This blend can appear chaotic yet coherent, reflecting my own nature as an individual — complex and full of contradictions.

For me, while rational logic holds importance, it is ultimately in service to sensibility. There's a symbiotic relationship between my work and myself; each serves the other. At times, the process feels like an intimate dialogue, a silent conversation unfolding through the language of creativity.

What comes easiest for you as a designer? What is hardest?

Designing comes relatively easily to me, but the real challenge lies in helping others understand the ideas my designs convey. There's a saying, 'You can never truly understand someone until you've walked in their shoes and seen the world from their perspective.' However, when you do step into their shoes, sometimes the journey can be unexpectedly poignant, even in brief moments. '

My work primarily delves into the spiritual realm, approached through a personal lens rather than as an external observer. It's about envisioning an ideal state of self-redemption, instead of just amplifying the harsh realities of illness. To achieve this, I strive to incorporate elements in my designs that evoke feelings of relaxation or positivity. Recognizing that my work may not always be immediately accessible, I understand the need to strive for greater clarity. At the same time, I am learning to find a balance, to create a dialogue with my audience that resonates on a deeper, more intuitive level.

Where do you find inspiration for new collections? How important is color to your design process?

I often find inspiration in my personal experiences and practices. Life is replete with insights, both profound and simple, and I believe these can be beautifully extended into my designs. In my work, colors are more than just aesthetic choices; they carry deep emotional and cultural values. As I've mentioned before, in my hometown, colors hold symbolic meanings: blue represents the vast sky, symbolizing wisdom, health, eternity, peace, and loyalty. Red is emblematic of the Dharma Protector, while white, resembling the clouds, conveys purity, kindness, and auspiciousness. These colors not only enrich my designs visually but also imbue them with layers of cultural and personal significance.

Readers would love to hear about the collection you will be showing on the runway at New York Fashion Week FW24 in February? Inspiration, fabrics, pallette, etc.?

Mental disorders, with their intricate etiologies, pose significant medical and social challenges. Social anxiety disorder is a prime example of this. In our society, there's a tendency to gravitate towards individuals who are expressive and extroverted, both in social and professional contexts. Often, these traits are perceived as markers of success. However, for some people, social interactions can be extremely uncomfortable and distressing. These individuals may find solace in the company of animals rather than humans, a preference that is frequently misinterpreted as mere introversion. Many suggest that these individuals should change to become more communicatively adept. But I believe that this group deserves more understanding and tolerance, rather than being judged by conventional standards of 'success.'

In my collection, I explore these themes by depicting the act of maintaining distance, the concept of self-concealment in personal spaces, and the use of animal and plant elements as forms of spiritual support. These artistic choices are intended to help others better comprehend the inner world of those grappling with social anxiety.

Do you have a favorite look in this collection?

My favorite design in the collection features two large cats embracing a person. This piece deeply resonates with my own experiences and feelings about the therapeutic nature of animals, particularly cats and dogs. There's something almost magical about their presence. No matter where you are, or what anxieties and discomforts you may be facing, these warm and affectionate creatures have a unique way of bringing relaxation and relief. Their company can transform our mood, offering a sense of calm and comfort in our moments of need.

Where can readers purchase your designs?

Currently, my designs are available for purchase directly through my Instagram via direct messaging or by reaching out to me via email.

What's next for you as a designer and your brand?

The next crucial step for me is the productization of my designs. Many of my creations are conceptual and unique, posing a significant challenge in the commercialization process of my brand. To successfully navigate this, I need to adapt my designs to be more wearable while still retaining my distinct personal style. This balance is essential for the development and growth of my brand, making my designs not only artistically expressive but also accessible and appealing to a broader audience.
