Phoenix Poetry Challenge Day 7 - Tempering Steel

Day 7 of the Phoenix Poetry Challenge is about tempering steel. Every sword is forged in a fire. Life can be like that too. Things that seem unpleasant but are good for us. So we are to write a poem using tempering steel as a metaphor for our lives.

The Onion
by Marilyn R Wilson

Sometimes life's hardships
Feel like peeling an onion.
Layer after pungent layer,
Strong odors fill my nostrils.
Tears spill down my cheeks.
A task unwelcome and unpleasant.
Then the magic starts to happen.
Butter, a pan, and onion bits
Sautéing slowly a low flame.
Raw, acrid fumes start to morph.
And the onion slices are reborn.
Softer, sweeter, eerily fragrant.
A sprinkle of salt and pepper added
Transform them ever higher.
Who knew that acrid, tart onion
Was secreting away sugars?
A touch of fat, a bit heat and time
Transform ordinary to gourmet,
Coaxing out the coy sweetness.
Caramelizing what was harsh
Into a luscious, savory ambrosia
I could eat with a spoon.
Tempering our souls takes
Many tough trials by fire.
Through them we are reborn,
Transformed and elevated.
Our inner strengths drawn outward.
We evolve ever higher.
