Can you share a bit about all the different roles you embrace? Looking back, were there any signs from childhood that this is the career you would choose?

The roles I embrace today are all connected to one mission - to teach people how to access and harness the power of inner wisdom. From hosting a podcast, leading retreats, running workshops and speaking engagements, coaching clients and writing a book, it’s all the same. Did I see myself doing any of this as a child? No. However, I can clearly see the path behind me and how it’s all connected. I’ve always been someone who has followed my dreams. I have come to recognize that our dreams are actually spiritual breadcrumbs leading us to the best version of who we are. Our job is to follow those dreams by listening to the whispers of the soul and the nudge of the heart.

What inspired you to write Whispers of the Soul, and why was now the perfect time to publish it?

Our soul is whispering to us all the time, trying to lead us to the best possible version of our lives and who we are. I’ve experienced this many times. When I lean in and listen, my life unfolds in the most beautiful and magical ways. From professional opportunities such as building a successful national arts organization to personal pursuits that have led me to live in incredible places around the world. Life is infinitely better when you listen. Often that whisper will push you out of your comfort zone though, as did the whisper I received to teach others how to connect to their inner wisdom. It took me a year to find the courage to listen to that whisper. I understood it was mine to do, but it scared me. It took me another two years to complete the book. This book is timely as it is about awakening to who you really are, and there is a great awakening happening around the world right now. Perhaps you feel it too. Something nudging you. Something whispering to you that you are more than what you believe. That there is more to this life and you have more to give.

How does the writing process work for you? Do you schedule a time every day, work madly when inspiration hits or ?

I started my writing sessions with a spiritual practice which usually took place first thing in the morning. This included a short five minute meditation to help quiet my mind, followed by an invitation to my spirit guides to join me. Then I sat for another 15 - 20 minutes, sometimes longer, writing stream of consciousness style with my eyes closed while typing on the computer. While doing this, I was in conversation with my spirit guides asking questions and simply allowing things to bubble up from within. I called this my spiritual writing. After my “session” with my guides, I’d go back and read what was written. There was always something I could work with. A nugget of an idea, a story I could incorporate into a lesson. One chapter of my book is the full conversation I had with spirit or my higher self verbatim. Much of my book was shaped in this way, as were many of my early podcast episodes. For the first draft of the book, I made a commitment to myself I would write for two hours every morning. Often I’d write longer, but never less. I brought on a development editor half way through this process. Her feedback and enthusiasm for the work further fuelled my inspiration and kept me motivated.

As an author - what do you enjoy most about the writing process or comes easily to you? What feels most like a chore - a struggle?

I love playing with words and crafting the visuals through storytelling. I’m a long way from mastering this art and I love that this is something I can continue to develop. It feels like a game with little victories along the way. Sometimes one beautifully crafted sentence is enough to light me up. When I put together a beautiful crafted paragraph, fireworks go off. What feels like a chore is getting things grammatically correct. And my spelling is atrocious. Also, in my second draft, I shifted all my stories to present tense. I found that strangely challenging.

Can you share a sound byte on what Whispers of the Soul is about? What is the one thing you hope readers take away after reading this book?

Whispers of the Soul is really a love story. It’s about learning to love yourself so deeply that you become unshakeable in the pursuit of your dreams and create a life aligned with who you were born to be. If there is one thing I want readers to walk away with it’s this - invest time with yourself as you would with a new lover to get to know who you really are.

What would you most like readers to know about you?

I am a nomad who gave up most of her possessions to live an untethered life with my husband. The decision to do this came as a whisper of the soul in the spring of 2020. Despite the uncertainty of the times, my husband and I leaned into this guidance and life has and continues to unfold in the most remarkable and unexpected ways.

What's next? Anything in the works you'd like to share?

There are three things I’m really excited about. I’m starting a monthly book club to create a community and discussion around some of the themes in the book and the things we are experiencing in the world today. Each month will focus on a different theme. These are free events. You can find out more at https://joyfulinspiredliving.com/events. In June I am launching a month long group coaching program to take a deeper dive into the work that is taught in the book. You can find out more about that program here: https://joyfulinspiredliving.com/the-wisdom-way. And I’m putting together a walking tour in France along the Camino which will also include some of the teachings from the book. Mindful walking in nature is a prominent theme in my book, so it feels fitting to lead a walking tour while teaching about inner wisdom. I’m still in the process of putting that together. I would love to have it ready to offer in the fall 2024, but may have to wait until spring 2025.

I would love to close with a favourite quote - your go to that inspires you daily.

My favourite quote is one by Rumi: “When you do things from the soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy."
