Please share a bit about your journey to embrace fashion design as a career.

It started in high school, I became interested in styling after watching an old show called “What not to wear." I liked how they put outfits and colors together. I started using those tools to dress up in school - which in my home town of mostly farms this wasn’t the norm of flannel and jeans haha.

I was always into art and creative outlets, so when I turned 18 I took the big move from Fairvew Alberta to Vancouver to study fashion design

How did you learn your skills?

I didn’t know how to sew much other than what was taught in Home Ec, I was able to expand my skills by completing my degree in Fashion Design at the Art Institute of Vancouver. Upon graduating in 2012, I created my self titled womenswear brand, Delayne Dixon

Who are you as a designer? Aesthetic? Customer? Brand?

I would describe my designer brand aesthetic to be a refined mob wife. Someone who power dresses and isn’t apologetic. She dresses her inner vixen. I like to use faux fur, bold reds, metallics and houndstooth.

What comes easiest for you as a designer? What is hardest?

I can usually come up with a collection concept fairly easily, that’s the part I really enjoy, as well as the shoots, the styling and designing the overall aesthetic. The hardest I would say is tackling all of the hats that an entrepreneur has to wear. Not only are you the designer, but you’re the customer service, photographer, sourcer, pattern maker, marketer - I could go on and on. It can be overwhelming at times, so I try to practice gratitude. Not everyone can do that they love for a living.

Where do you find inspiration for new collections? How important is color to your design process?

I do a lot of fashion forecasting, utilizing vogue shows, Pinterest, other art medium, and specifically streetwear. The younger generation is styling in more interesting ways, I don’t follow trends too literally, but occasionally my subconscious will pick up a color that is trending on socials etc. I aslo like to look up new design techniques as well - it’s important to keep learning and growing.

Readers would love to know more about the collection you be showing at Vancouver Fashion Week.

Expect to see some sultry, sexy, bold and refined punk looks in this collection, I’ll be using my brand staple colors of black, red, houndstooth and metallics. It is dark, romantic, and intense. Couture fashion should be emotional. I hope the crowd gets those goosebumps.

Do you have a favorite look in this collection?

So far my favorite look is an all tartan plaid gown, another huge inspiration of mine is Vivienne Westwood.

Where can readers purchase your designs?

They can purchase my designs on Delaynedixon.com or on WolfandBadger.com.

What's next for you as a designer and your brand?

I just joined a showroom in Beverly Hills - an appointment only boutique for celebrity stylists. I’m eager to break into the LA scene and dress more prestigious events. I want to keep expanding.
