Standing Loud
by Marilyn R. Wilson

years of hiding
of minimizing of
fading away of
hiding in a corner
I am woman
afraid to offend

letting others fill
the entire space with
their confidence
their bravado
their need to stand
alone in the spotlight

aging and female
a mantle to bear
expectation fulfilled
irrelevant, ignored
not included, just
support expected

NO I shouted!
my body rises
stepping forward
moving to the center
into the spotlight
brave and proud

I am woman
I am elder
I am mother
I am wife
I am friend.
I am relevant

from my depths flows
wisdom that teaches
touch that heals
support that lifts
tears that bear witness
for all humanity

I am standing loud.
