24/6: Giving up Screens One Day a Week to Get More Time, Creativity, and Connection by Tiffany Shlain (ePub)
Synopsis
Do you wish you had more time to do what you love, think deeply, and focus on the people and things that matter most? By giving up screens one day a week for over a decade, Internet pioneer and renowned filmmaker Tiffany Shlain and her family have gained more time, productivity, connection, and presence.
Shlain takes us on a thought-provoking and entertaining journey through time and technology, introducing a strategy for flourishing in our 24/7 world. Drawn from the ancient ritual of Shabbat, living 24/6 can work for anyone from any background. With humor and wisdom, Shlain shares her story, offering the accessible lessons she has learned and providing a blueprint for how to do it yourself.
“Bolstered with fascinating and germane facts about neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, and the history of the concept of a day of rest” (Publishers Weekly), 24/6 makes the case for incorporating this weekly reset into our 24/7 lives, issuing a call to rebalance ourselves and our society.
Review -
It is a little confusing on Amazon as this book seems to be under another title as well - 24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week, but I am reviewing with this title as it shows a later publish date.
While I am not Jewish, I love the author's idea of a Tech Shabat - a 24 hour period one day a week where you turn off all technical devices, let go of email and the internet, and go old school. It could also be called a Tech Day of Rest or other title that is meaningful to you. Other books I have read lean towards speaking only the evils of today's technology. While there is a definite dark side that needs to be managed - I struggle with it myself - it is impossible to avoid for most of us. I know this as a published author.
Instead this book offers a different choice, the idea of taking a 24 hour break once a week that helps short circuit the constant pull. This is something I could actually do. In the book the author covers how she and her family accomplish it - what they do and don't allow, what their typical Tech Shabat looks like, and the steps you need to take to fill that time with alternatives. There is a huge section at the end with hints, recommendations and comments from those who have tried it to get you started. The rewards for their family has been huge.
While I think my kids would have loved this when they were young, I know I personally need this now. So much of what I do is on the computer, with the internet always trying drawing me in. I may have to shift my tech free day here and there to make it work, but I am determined to try. Time to go old school and take a break from the web.
