Poetry - Not a Girly Girl

Not A Girly Girl
by Marilyn R. Wilson

I am not a girly girl!

I was born in-between.
Different from the start.
What was I made of?
Not sugar and spice
And everything nice.
And most definitely not
Any snips, snails and
Puppy-dogs' tails.

I didn't like pink
Or lace or frills
No bright fingernail polish
Or curly hairstyles
I had to wear dresses
But only wore plain
My companions 2 brothers
I didn't understand girls.

I also wasn't sporty
A tom boy or butch.
Somehow I fell softly
Between all the cracks.
The books that I read
Never offered icky romance.
I dove into murder mysteries
And wild science fiction.

I hated to go on dates.
Instead met men only while out.
Loved working with salesmen
Right down to telling smutty jokes.
I danced with abandon
Enjoyed the company of men.
Was a feminist to the core
With opinions that matched.

Yet a man self assured
Not afraid of a strong woman,
Chose me, created a family,
Loved me outside the box.
Decades later we still stand
Side-by-side, both unique.
A man confident in himself,
The girl a warrior at heart.

I am not a girly girl.
