Synopsis -

In this powerful, redemptive true story, a young man living on the edge of survival is transformed into a healing presence in the lives of all he touches.

At age ten, Peter Mutabazi ran away from home. For five years he survived on the streets of Kampala, Uganda, a city of 1.5 million, until one man saw potential in him. This man not only supported Peter through school but forever altered Peter's outlook in every possible way.

Since then, Peter's turnaround story has been remarkable. He served as a relief coordinator during the Rwandan genocide, worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross during the Sudan conflict, emigrated to the United States, fostered countless children, and became a single adoptive parent. He speaks seven languages and has traveled to more than one hundred countries as an international advocate for vulnerable children.

In Now I Am Known Peter reveals the transformational power of taking risks, learning to forgive, overcoming self-doubt, breaking negative patterns, and believing in a better future marked by optimism and purpose.

Review -

What a wonderful memoir.  Just what I like.  I have been following Peter Mutabazi on Instagram for awhile and have always found myself in awe.  His joy, the joy on the faces of his children, and the fun they have creating their content. And in the back of my mind, I found also a bit of guilt that I hadn't fostered any kids.  The idea was there at one time, but I had 3 young ones and money was tight. I also needed another room, so it didn’t make sense. But the what if and touch of guilt is always there.

What I loved in this book was it only had a small amount about fostering, but definitely the most important parts that anyone thinking of fostering should know - they are desperately short of foster families, the process is layered and goes deep, and it isn't easy. These kids have been traumatized by life and the system, so healing takes time, patience and understanding.

Peter Mutabazi: From Homeless Runaway to
Foster Parent of  47 | Sheila Walsh on TBN | Sep 4, 2025

The majority of the book offers a deeply honest and personal recounting of his life, from abusive father and lack of life's basics,  to living and surviving on the streets. Each step from his life on the streets to where he is today required two things - a person who stepped in, saw potential in him, and opened a door of opportunity, and the author's decision to say yes and work as hard as he could to rise to the expectations.

And as he rose, he felt the responsibility to give back - something he learned when others did the same for him. No matter how little he made at the jobs he found, he sent money home so his siblings could also rise. He and his siblings were the first people in his village to ever attend university and go on to work in higher positions.  He also landed in jobs that allowed him to raise the quality of life globally for others. That he ended becoming a foster dad was simply the next step in his life of service to others.
