The second Maisie Dobbs mystery.

Synopsis -

Jacqueline Winspear’s marvelous debut, Maisie Dobbs, won her fans from around the world and raised her intuitive, intelligent, and resourceful heroine to the ranks of literature’s favorite sleuths. Birds of a Feather, its follow-up, finds psychologist and private investigator Maisie Dobbs on another dangerously intriguing adventure in London “between the wars.” It is the spring of 1930, and Maisie has been hired to find a runaway heiress. But what seems a simple case at the outset soon becomes increasingly complicated when three of the heiress’s old friends are found dead. Is there a connection between the woman’s mysterious disappearance and the murders? Who would want to kill three seemingly respectable young women? As Maisie investigates, she discovers that the answers lie in the unforgettable agony of the Great War.

Review -

If you haven't read book one, I would pause and read it first. I did it the other way around and am sorry I did.  Birds of a Feather is the second book in the 18 book Maisie Dobbs series and it is a gem. Maisie is slowly gaining new clients thanks to her benefactor - Lady Rowen - and Maurice Blanche, the man trained and educated her.

It all begins with a runaway heiress.  Her domineering father wants her found and brought home immediately, but that isn't as easy as it first seems.  It slowly becomes obvious that something, or someone, has scared the heiress deeply.  And those fears seem founded when 3 of her old friends are found murdered.  Can Maisie find the heiress in time, and find a way to protect her from the mysterious threat?

The answer to the riddle of why these women were targeted lies in the past during wartime.  The exploration of that past was an eye opener for me. I really knew little more than the basics tht time, so I love that with each of the first two novels I learned more about what people experienced during war time, the ways they coped with the trauma after, and how all of that influenced their lives for years to come.

Another great book where the people and places come alive. We walk in their shoes, look into their hearts, and see the fears and regrets that drive them. A great read. I will be picking up book 3 soon.
