Age is....
by Marilyn R. Wilson

Age is not just a number
It's not easy to define
A noun, and a verb, and
An adjective at times

A mirror reflecting
The path of one's life
A bridge between decades
With both happiness and strife

Age rises relentlessly
Unavoidable and set
Change proves unstoppable
I can only try to forget

New aches arrive weekly
Some foods have to leave
The passing of love ones
Time needed to grieve

My heart breaks more often
Yet sings with each new life
It's a roller coaster ride
That can cut like a knife

My journey ever changing
Concessions must be made
Will I stay relevant
Sometimes I'm afraid

Bedtimes come earlier
Yet sleep proves a struggle
Making naps de rigeur
Or my thoughts are a muddle

Mistakes are appalling
As is declining endurance
Confidence can waver
Sometimes I need assurance

Respect comes and goes
Mere youth roll their eyes
Grandkids still adore me
Media gives me a by

It's more than a number
It's wisdom and surrender
Mindset and attitude
A most personal adventure

Perhaps my aging body
Is a big cosmic joke
All I can do is keep going
I wish it was a hoax
