9 Days of Holiday Cocktails!

In the past, I was never much of a cocktail person. However, my son-in-law is and that sparked my interest. The first I made for company was the Pantone Blue which my son-in-law adjusted slightly to a version I like even better. You can see, my review and his version HERE!

Today I was looking for a unique cocktail to make for a friend I will be seeing Saturday and saw several lists of  interesting ideas.  I decided to share nine here as I hope to make each at some point in the future. My goal for now is to try to seven of them December 31st, but who knows.  And I have to watch the budget as it could get expensive buying all the fixings.  Not sure yet what order I'll make them in, but I'll add comments beneath each the day after I try them.

This means you'll have to check back to see my reviews. I may also include my reviews in a video series I've been thinking about - Books and Beverages. The concept would be to try a beverage and then read from a book, sharing a bit about both.  If I do this, they'll go up on my YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/channel/UCZx-WR1Qzs7MUkXQ1HgipLg.

Now for the amazing recipes I chose. I mean just look at them! If you decide to try to make any of them before I do - or even after - be sure to leave your comments on Olio By Marilyn sharing what you thought. I would be intrigued to hear your opinion.

Geese A’ Laying

From Sophia Rosser of Green Room in London.

Ingredients -
.5 oz Grey Goose
.5 oz plum jam
2 tsp Cointreau
Juice of a quarter of a lime
Top with prosecco

Instructions -
Shake all ingredients (except the prosecco) over ice, strain into champagne flute and top with prosecco.
Update - tried this on 12-13-20 and enjoyed it a lot. A lighter taste so good before a dinner. Only note is the Plum jam can be hard to find and you really have to work that shaker to get the jam fully mixed in.

Winter Wonderland

From Morimoto Asia at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida

Ingredients -
1.5 oz vodka
.75 oz peppermint schnapps
.75 oz white chocolate liqueur
Candy cane
Red sugar

Instructions -
Mix and chill ingredients. Pour into a red sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with a candy cane hanging on the rim.
UPDATE - Tried this on 12-19-20.  Taste was great, but the drink does NOT fill the glass like this.  it's only 2 oz. of liquid.  You would have to shake quite a bit to melt enough ice to create this much liquid in your martini glass. Just saying!

Frosted Mistletoe Margarita (A slushy style drink - I made an on the rocks version instead)
From Half Baked Harvest - 4 Servings

Ingredients -
1-1/2 T granulated sugar
1 T kosher salt
3/4 C silver tequila
1 C no sugar added cranberry juice
3/8 C Cointreau (orange liquor)
1/2 C fresh lime juice
3/8 C fresh or frozen cranberries
2-4 T honey, use more or less to your taste
zest from 1 orange
1-1/2 to 2 C ice
rosemary and sugared cranberries, for serving (optional)

Instructions -
Combine the sugar and salt on a shallow plate. Rim each glass in salted sugar. In a blender, combine the tequila, cranberry juice, orange liquor, lime juice, cranberries, and honey. Add the ice and blend until slushy. Add the orange zest and blend to combine. Pour into your prepared glasses. Garnish with rosemary and sugared cranberries, if desired. Drink!

Sugared Cranberries -
In a medium bowl, stir together 1 cups fresh cranberries with 1/4 cup pure maple syrup. (NOTE I subbed frozen cranberries and halved the recipe and still had more than enough.) Let sit 10-15 minutes. Strain the cranberries, then add them to a parchment lined baking sheet. Toss the cranberries with 3/4 cup granulated sugar until all the cranberries are coated. Allow the cranberries to dry, in a single layer, for at least one hour.
Update - Tried this one and 01-03-21. I really enjoyed this cocktail. Most holiday drinks are sweet. This one was nice and tart it had a great citrus-y taste. I had 2 similar recipes to choose from and decided I like the ingredients in this one best, but wanted to serve it on ice instead of as a slushy. So  only added a small amount of ice to the blender. Then I poured into 4 glasses and topped up with ice until full - then decorated with sugared cranberries and the sprig of rosemary.

The Snow Cap

From Conrad Cartagena

Ingredients -
1.5 oz Baileys
1 oz vodka
1.5 oz coconut cream (see note below)
Oreo dust
coconut wafer

Instructions -
Add Baileys, vodka, and coconut cream to shaker and shake with ice. Strain into martini glass rimmed crushed Oreos. Garnish with coconut wafer.
UPDATE - Tried this one on 12/25/20 - Yup our Xmas date drink to toast with.  It is anchored by the baileys, so that is the main flavour you taste. The vodka gives it an extra kick and the coconut cream adds a hint of coconut and extra creaminess. The coconut cream was a challenge to find. It is NOT a liquor and it is NOT coconut milk. It is a condensed coconut milk with a stronger coconut flavour. If you can't find it in a store, it's available through Amazon.

Santa's Chocolate Snow Martini
From the Cock n' Bull Restaurant in Peddler's Village, Bucks County, Pennsylvania

2.5 oz half and half

Instructions -
