Review -

I dove into this book a few months back after finished The Power of Habits and combined, they offered me the perfect one-two punch. The previous book followed what science has learned through research over the last several decades. In Atomic Habits the focus is personal. We move forward, expanding and enlarging on the subject.

While the underlying principles are similar, Atomic Habits speaks in practical terms about how to look at our daily routine, then determine the most successful ways to create new positive habits that will stand the test of time.  The author uses language that is easy to understand, discusses how to figure out where a new habit will best fit in one's day, and helps readers understand the dynamics behind why something doesn't work.

Of all the ideas shared, the one that helped me the most was figuring out how to establish a daily writing habit by embedding it in the middle of an established habit. After watching my routine for several days, I decided I would allow myself a slow start in the morning with a cup of coffee, the newspaper and a little social media connecting. BUT, when I snagged my second cuppa, I would then head immediately to the computer and write for an hour. It only took a week of doing this before I realized the new routine had become automatic.

If you only read one book on habits, make it this one.
