Synopsis -

How far will you go to find your story?

For too long, Opaline, Martha and Henry have been the side characters in their own lives. But when a vanishing bookshop casts its spell, these three unsuspecting strangers will discover that their own stories are every bit as extraordinary as the ones found in the pages of their beloved books. And by unlocking the secrets of the shelves, they find themselves transported to a world of wonder… where nothing is as it seems.

‘The thing about books,’ she said ‘is that they help you to imagine a life bigger and better than you could ever dream of.’

Review -

I love reading great fiction and The Lost Bookshop definitely fell in that category. The story it shares is more than one note. It is, in fact, very complex, with several themes seamlessly woven together, all while moving readers between the past and the present.  This isn't an easy thing to accomplish, but when done well, it is hard to put down.

In this tale we follow two women and the characters that surround them. In the past is Opaline. She lives in a time of arranged marriages, where women treated as insignificant. They are chattels that husbands, fathers and brothers could do with as they liked. When her brother is going to force her to marry she flees, not once but twice, hoping she will find a way to create a life that she loves. In an instant, hee freedom is snatched away.

In the present we follow Martha who fled to escape abuse at the hands of her very violent husband.  She stumbles into a new life quite by accident - working for an eccentric older lady who is more than she seems, and living in at house that is more than it appears.  When Henry comes into her life, everything shifts.

Love, family, betrayal, trauma, healing, magic and hope are all blended into this intriguing tale that slowly draws us towards a magical bookstore that is center to this tale.
