An enchanting and escapist novel

Synopsis -

Nestled among the cobblestone streets of Compiègne, there existed a bakery unlike any other.

Rumours were whispered through the town that its pastries offered a taste of magic, chasing away the darkest of sorrows. Just one bite of a croissant might bring luck, unlock a precious memory or reveal hidden longings.

But dark clouds were looming on the horizon…

For Edie Lane, a recipe for disaster doesn’t require that many ingredients. Take an unhealthy amount of wishful thinking and a sprinkle of desperation and that’s how Edie left everything behind in Ireland for her dream job at a bakery in Paris. Except the bakery isn’t in Paris – and neither is Edie.

This might not be where Edie intended to be but she soon realizes it's exactly where she needs to be…

Review -

I just finished another book by this author - The Lost Bookshop - a little over a month ago and enjoyed it, so I was excited to dive into another. I found the Mysterious Bakery on the Rue de Paris an enjoyable read. While the plot is different, there are similar elements such as well developed characters, difficult lives, mistakes, challenges, personal growth, healing, love, and finding passion for life, along with a light touch of magic in the form of a ghost.

This time, however, the story is led by the loss. For the bakery owner, that loss was of her father.  He was the original owner and a brilliant baker. She struggles to keep her father's legacy alive as the banks try to foreclose and sell the building off to a heartless developer.  For Edie, it was the loss of her mother. Answering a work ad from France gave her the opportunity to escape being surrounded by reminders of her mother, and to stand on her own. What she found in the end was the pain of loss couldn't be left behind. She needed to allow herself to grieve, and then to reach for her dreams.

History, romance, greed and the complexity of relationships are intertwined throughout to give depth to the storyline.  Moments of clarity and healing draw readers ever closer to an end that celebrates the best of humanity and reminds us of what can be accomplished when good people work together. We are also reminded that dreams aren't just fantasies. They can become realities if we are open to the possibility.
