Friends
by Marilyn R Wilson

A reason to be
Drawn together by purpose
Paths widely separate until
We came to this moment
Suddenly we walk together
Hands brushing or clasped
Deep hugs offered often
A passion, a career goal,
Our children aligned
Shared work to complete
No matter how long or short
No matter how deep we share
This is time together serves
A purpose we both reach for

A season together
The proximity of our homes
Our work desks connected
Classes or study groups together
As we work towards a degree
Volunteering might unite us
An election, a charity, an event
Sports or dance teams together
Carpooling our children to
School and on field trips
Our friendship perhaps transient
But solid and strong while
We move through life together
Temporarily, then drawn apart.

A lifetime or lifetimes
Will we ever know?
Our first chat over coffee,
First walk in the sunshine
Or breaking bread together
An instant, deep connection
That can't be denied.
Whether friendship or partner,
Mentor or parental figure
Connecting often or rarely
There is no denying our bond
Whether this lifetime or many
Our deep connection endures.

Friends for a reason
Friends for a season
Friends for a lifetime
Friends for an eternity
No matter the purpose
Each cherished and nurtured
Given the freedom to become
The freedom to fade
The freedom to be reborn.
My soul always opens wide
Welcoming each into my life
Accepting without expectation
As I offer these words.
You are loved, you are cherished.
