Seed-based Homemade Protein Powder

Buying vegan protein powder has proven a complicated journey. I always go for the sugar-free, unflavored options and they can be harder to find. Seems everyone likes having a lot more sweet than I do. This might be because they use just protein powder and liquid.  I have a fab blender and always create a mix of spinach, frozen fruit, kefir, banana, and protein powder, so just need something plain.

I have
often thought about making my own, but have never taken the leap until now. Today seems to be the day I am ready.  I have only begun to explore the recipes out there, but this one from Eating Well popped for me because of it's simplicity and the fact these three ingredients are staples in my pantry. It offers 7 grams of protein a serving.  The only thing I didn't like is the weird serving size - 2 Tbsp. plus ¾ tsp. That is 2-1/3 T. HMMM.  Eating Well also recommends using a spice grinder and processing the seeds in small batches to get a finer smoother protein powder. A high speed blender can work, but can also turn the seeds into a paste.

Here is a recap of why they chose these 3 ingredients -
  • Hemp seeds are a complete source of plant-based protein, as they provide the nine essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce. They also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which help regulate inflammation in the body.

  • Chia seeds contain a combination of fiber, prebiotics, antioxidants and omega-3s, all of which can promote gut health because they encourage the growth of healthy bacteria. Chia seeds also contain protein, iron and calcium
  • Pepitas are one of the best seeds to eat if you’re looking to add more protein to your diet. A 1-ounce serving of pepitas offers 8 grams of protein and about 14% of the Daily Value of iron
I just mixed up my first batch today and it worked pretty well.  The final product makes a thicker drink with a little more texture than the store-bought version, but good overall.  I discovered another DIY recipe that looked promising, especially their list of optional additions (I def will incorporate a few).  I have put that recipe at the bottom as an alternate

Seed-based Homemade Protein Powder
Serving size 2 T plus 3/4 tsp.

Ingredients -

1 cup chia seeds, divided
1 cup hemp seeds, divided
¼ cup raw pepita

Optional additions can be found in the recipe below.

Directions -

Process the chia seeds, hemp seeds and pepitas in small batches in a spice grinder by pulsing just until finely ground, about 10 pulses (about 4-5 batches). As you finish a batch, add it to a bowl. When all seeds are processed, add any optional powders, then stir well to combine. Store in a airtight container for up to 2 on the shelf, or 2 months in the refrigerator.

While the final product won't be as fine, you can also process in a high speed blender. Pulse all ingredients together in a high-speed blender until finely ground, stopping to scrape the seed mixture from the bottom of the blender occasionally, then continue as above. I used my high speed blender for my first batch and it was okay, but def will be switching to a spice grinder in the future.

Note - Thought I would share my protein drink ingredients. I make 2 days servings at the same time, drink one, and store the other in the fridge for the next day.  For 2 servings I use 1 ripe banana, 2 scoops protein powder, a handful of frozen peach slices, a big handful of raw baby spinach, one cup of Mango Kefir, and about one and half cups water.  It is a bit thick, but I can thin with water if I need to.

This is a bonus.  I like the way a site called Via Cost created a DIY yourself recipe.  I have not included all the options and additions here.  I want just a unsweetened non-dairy powder and mentioned a few of the options that appealed to me.  If you want to see the full list of options, the URL is embedded under their name.  I have not tried this yet, but will update this post if and when I do.
